It Isn't Just Self-Care

Today, it's almost like a trend. People posting "self-care" all over their social medias. I am definitely guilty of that, too. But for me, it means something. I'm sure it means something to you too. It can mean a hundred different things. To me, it means that you are not willing to compromise your life and the way you live it for a single soul. This concept has changed me in ways that are hard to describe. In the simplest terms, I'd say that I finally realize what and who is most important to my life. And that is my happiness and me.

Forget everything social media has told you about self-care. Most social media platforms seem to force this idea of self-care as this almighty knowing and enlightenment when it's not. It's actually super easy to achieve and easy to maintain. It isn't some thing that only "older and wiser" people can obtain. When it comes down to it, the concept is as simple as letting go of the things that really don't matter, saying yes to things that benefit you and no to the things that don't.

Sometimes self-care can mean disassociating with certain hobbies and people from you life. This response is normal and encouraged. When you are young it is vital for your well-being to be selfish. Focus on you and only you because that's all that matters at the end of the day. I'm not saying be shit to your friends and family, but 90% of the things you do should benefit you.

Figure out what it is you want out of life and relationships and love and work on that. Put time into yourself before you try to put time into someone else. A lot of people seem to feel like having an "other half" is the key to happiness. That's absolute bullshit. Sure it's nice to have someone by your side who is supportive and understanding, but you don't necessarily need it.

Self-care is about looking within yourself and figuring out what you need and what you want; mostly what you need. Live your life in ways that are healthy. You have known right from wrong since you were in kindergarten. Make the right choices. And when you make a mistake, don't make it twice. Remember, growth is key.
