Unfortunately, yes. The infamous smart phone affects us worldwide. Today in society people rely so much on their phones; myself included don't get me wrong. I made it a point to try to stay off my phone as much as possible. I decided against getting a sim card for my phone that allows me to use it without Wifi. I did this because it will help me stay connected to my surroundings. However, if I absolutely need it in an emergency, I can always turn on my cellular data just to be safe!
Anyway, after a few weeks here in South America, I realized being glued to your phone is an epidemic throughout the World. As I walk down the street to my classes, I noticed a construction worker taking a break to look at his phone. I also noticed 3 students walking together, but not engaging each other because they were focused on their phones. I saw a woman walking her dog while staring at her phone screen. These incidents seem common, yes. But what was compelling was that I saw all three of these events happening at the exact same time. For a moment, I felt as though I was the only person on the street who wasn't looking at my phone.
But then again, here I am in class writing my blog because I couldn't focus and felt inspired. I know this post differs from the rest, but I felt it necessary to share this observation with people back in America. Yes we are detahced from society sometimes, but no we are not alone. People everywhere have issues with taking their eyes off the screen and opening them to the World.
